Oral hygiene practices have evolved significantly over millennia, yet traditional methods such as chewing sticks continue to be widely used across various cultures, particularly in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. This comparative analysis examines the efficacy of traditional chewing sticks versus modern toothbrushes in plaque removal and maintenance of gingival health. Through a comprehensive review of clinical studies, microbiological assessments, and epidemiological data, this research evaluates the antimicrobial properties, mechanical cleaning efficiency, and overall impact on periodontal health associated with both oral hygiene tools. The findings reveal that while modern toothbrushes demonstrate superior plaque removal efficiency when used with proper technique, traditional chewing sticks possess inherent antimicrobial properties and can be equally effective when used correctly. This paper provides insights into the potential integration of traditional oral hygiene practices with contemporary dental care approaches, offering implications for public health policy, dental product development, and cross-cultural oral health promotion strategies.
